Eighty competitors representing twenty one nations set out to decide team and individual honours. Team favourites were undoubtedly the reigning European champions Great Britain and they would sweep to victory with their three top riders William Fox–Pitt, Mary King and Nicola Wilson all finishing on their dressage scores. Fox–Pitt also claimed the individual silver medal on Cool Mountain ahead of New Zealand’s Andrew Nicholson. However a class above the rest was the individual gold medallist Michael Jung of Germany riding his brilliant 10 yr old La Biosthetique-Sam FBW.
